The Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) works to improve the lives and promote the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children, and young people. The organization strives to affect policy and programmatic change with broad, worldwide impact. 


This is a unique opportunity to reset and build WRC’s next-level individual engagement function from the ground up. The Senior Director will leverage his/her own expertise and collaborate with colleagues in the Development, Communications, Advocacy, and Program teams to develop and execute an effective strategy for marketing and fundraising that is integrated, expansive, and supporter centric.. 

Scope of Work  

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Individual Engagement and Marketing will serve as the primary strategist for supporter marketing and engagement, advancing the Women’s Refugee Commission’s impact and vision through activations, platforms, and relationships that grow our profile and share-of-mind with key external target audiences and stakeholders, including individual philanthropic donors, supporters, partners, and peer organizations.  Working in partnership with the External Relations Department, the Senior Director will also be a lead contributor to WRC’s brand strategy and management.  

The Senior Director will:  

  • Play a key role in the organization’s fundraising activities ($12+ million annual budget). 

  • Supervise WRC’s individual fundraising operations, including the cultivation, solicitation, and stewarding of all private donors and prospects, and fundraising events. 

  • Build a stronger base of support from individuals and private foundations to generate financial contributions to WRC. 

  • Be accountable for unrestricted private fundraising results; strengthening the collective efforts of the development team; and working with senior management and board members to increase revenue. 

  • Supervise the Individual Giving team.  

  • Develop bold engagement and giving ideas through a collaborative process with colleagues and senior leadership, based on research and experiences with donors. 

  • The successful candidate will exhibit sophisticated management skills and a strong orientation toward teamwork, problem solving, strategy development and implementation, and accountability. 

  Essential Functions  

  • In close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Senior Director will provide vision and leadership to create an organization-wide individual fundraising, marketing, and engagement strategy. Ensure goals are met or exceeded by developing comprehensive and holistic plans and platforms that effectively engage individual donors, major gifts, corporate donors, and sustainable, diversified philanthropy.  

  • Partner with the Executive Director and senior leaders to set global individual engagement vision, strategy, direction, and priorities, including designing effective donor and partner engagement strategies to expand WRC’s financial support base, grow a network of influential friends and allies, and cultivate Board giving and active engagement in fundraising efforts.  

  • Develop a clear marketing and fundraising strategy for annual campaigns and activities like year-end appeal, summer giving, our Voices of Courage luncheon, and other key moments for the organization during the year. Lead their planning and execution in collaboration with Executive, Development, and Communications teams.  

  • Develop a strong and responsive Individual Engagement team structure that supports current and projected needs. Manage the developing team talent, infrastructure, resourcing, and budget with commitment, integrity, and accountability. 

  • Partner with the Executive Director to set annual, and more regular, goals and KPIs for the team. Cultivate a data-driven mindset through use and analysis of relevant marketing and communication data, tools, and platforms to inform key decision-making.  

  • Build and manage high-performing, resilient, multidisciplinary, cross-functional project teams and responsive relationships between the Development and External Relations functions. 

  • Collaborate with colleagues from across the organization to source, inspire, develop, and deliver specific supporter campaigns, communications materials, activities, and analysis that amplify our work across key audiences and channels.  

  • Responsible for organizing the Board External Relations Committee, setting the agenda working collaboratively with team leaders and the Chair and Executive Director.  

  • At times and as needed, serve as senior project lead or manager for a wide variety of fundraising and donor engagement projects, supervising design, production, and distribution of all printed and digital assets and campaigns for supporter engagement. 

  • Work in partnership with Executive, Communications, and Advocacy teams on the creative direction for the brand expression and stewardship with supporters in the humanitarian and development sectors and philanthropic community.  

  • Be a key contributor to growth culture by exploring new systems, leveraging external collaborators and partners, and integrating best practices to clarify WRC’s value propositions and position WRC as an innovator, change-maker, and disrupter in a crowded market with key stakeholders.

  • A seasoned professional, who understands how to effectively engage a diverse supporter base, using data and analytics to segment audiences and develop key insights to maximize the effectiveness of supporter campaigns and engagement efforts.  

  • A creative problem solver and generative thinker, who can effectively build flexible, agile plans; capitalize on emerging opportunities; and simultaneously drive forward WRC’s short and long-term goals and objectives.   


  • Minimum of 15-20 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in development, marketing, and communications. Proven experience leading broad-based engagement activities for a global humanitarian or rights organization. 

  • Experience managing and mentoring high-performing development, communications, and marketing teams. 

  • Deep experience of developing and implementing successful marketing and engagement plans from strategy through execution to analysis at an enterprise level, or in change management or growth modes, at an urgent pace.  

  • Sophisticated knowledge of the digital and social media space, with significant demonstrated success of implementation across digital platforms. 

  • Advanced knowledge of marketing metrics and software platforms; MS Office and SharePoint, Adobe Creative Suite, MailChimp, Raiser’s Edge/Blackbaud, Salesforce, or related.   

  • Demonstrated ability to see the “big picture,” think strategically, synthesize, and translate strategy into targeted, actionable engagement goals and objectives. 

  • Deep knowledge of using marketing data and analysis, audience modeling, donor moves management and scenario planning to inform key decision-making. 

  • Strong relationship management. Successful record of engaging and guiding senior leaders and Board members, deepening their involvement in supporter marketing and engagement efforts.  

  • Keen understanding of how to use omnichannel traditional and digital content, including social media, to support the efforts of both fundraising and mobilization teams, especially with individual philanthropic donors/and or investors. 

           Reports to:  Executive Director  

           Target Salary: $165,000 - $195,000 (Commensurate with experience) 

           Location:  New York - Hybrid
