Women’s Refugee Commission is a non-profit organization committed to protecting the rights and safety of displaced and migrant women and girls in the US and around the world. Since our founding 35 years ago, WRC has worked to protect the rights of displaced women, children, and youth and to transform the humanitarian system so that it is more responsive to their needs. We have a proven track record of rigorous monitoring, advocacy, and public education that advances women’s rights and curbs harmful policies and practices.
As part of its strategic communications and advocacy efforts, WRC seeks the expertise of a media outreach consultant to support increased visibility and impact of its work through targeted media engagement. 
Scope of Work
The consultant will work closely with WRC’s communications and advocacy teams to: 
  • Develop and implement a media outreach strategy aligned with WRC’s advocacy goals. 
  • Identify key media opportunities and pitch WRC stories, research, and spokespersons to relevant journalists and outlets. 
  • Distribute press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and other media materials. 
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local, national, and international journalists and media outlets. 
  • Support media outreach around major events, report launches, campaigns, and emergencies. 
  • Monitor media coverage and provide regular updates and analysis of WRC’s media impact. 
  • Provide media training or talking points for WRC staff, partners, or spokespersons as needed. 
  • Position key WRC staff as thought leaders. 
  • Ensure that all messaging is consistent with WRC’s brand, values, and protection standards. 
Key Deliverables
  • Media outreach strategy and implementation plan. 
  • Consistent growth in the weekly number of high impact/leading media placements (e.g., op-eds, articles, interviews). 
  • Media toolkit(s) for key campaigns or report launches. 
  • Monthly media coverage reports. 
  • Contact database of key journalists and media outlets relevant to WRC’s work. 
  • Final summary report outlining activities, outcomes, and recommendations.
Timeline and Duration:
The consultancy will run from August 11, 2025 to October 31, 2025, subject to deliverables and timelines agreed upon at the contract signing. 
Reporting and Coordination:
The consultant will work with the WRC VP for Advocacy and External Relations and coordinate closely with relevant program teams. 
Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in media outreach, journalism, or strategic communications. 
  • Strong network of media contacts, especially in humanitarian, gender, and/or refugee issues. 
  • Familiarity with gender equality, refugee protection, and humanitarian issues. 
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines. 
  • Experience working with advocacy organizations or NGOs is an asset. 
Rate:
Compensation based on a budget payable up to 30K, commensurate with experience over a 3-month period.
