ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND:
The Women's Refugee Commission (WRC) is a research and advocacy organization that seeks to improve the lives and protect the rights of women, children, and youth displaced by conflict and crisis. We research their needs, identify solutions, and advocate for programs and policies to strengthen their resilience and drive change in humanitarian practice. The Women's Refugee Commission is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

SCOPE OF WORK:
The primary role of the Deputy Vice President (DVP) for New Initiatives will be to mine new areas of focus for WRC. The DVP will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's strategic vision and positioning within the industry.
Reporting to the VP for Programs, the DVP for New Initiatives will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including research and policy experts, communications and advocacy teams, and development managers, to lead and integrate thought leadership on new initiatives within WRC’s broader strategy.
In this highly visible and collaborative role, and using the spheres of influence as defined below, the DVP for New Initiatives will focus on three core strategic priorities for WRC as follows:
  •   Strengthening crisis preparedness, response, and recovery
  • Promoting the respect of rights, agency, and dignity of people affected by crisis and displacement, enabling them to thrive
  • Achieving more equitable and just systems, policies, and practices at the local, national, and global levels
 Spheres of influence:
  • Humanitarian systems (e.g. UNHCR, PRM, UNOCHA)  - Programming & Policy
  • National/municipal systems (e.g. city of Barranquilla, US Congress)  - Rights of & Access to services for displaced people
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Lead the development of new program initiatives aligned with WRC's mission and strategic priorities, with a focus on cultivating new partnerships. Key focus areas will include:
    1. Climate change and displacement: Spearhead the formulation of WRC's comprehensive strategy to address the multifaceted impacts of climate change on displacement, encompassing both policy advocacy and programmatic interventions. This entails devising initiatives aimed at supporting women who are disproportionately affected by environmental shifts in safeguarding their livelihoods, while concurrently facilitating adaptation and resilience-building efforts within affected communities.
    2. Technology integration: Lead efforts to track and assess the integration of technology within humanitarian systems. Identify when/how innovative technological solutions enhance the accessibility and inclusion of displaced populations and where/when they contribute to further exclusion.
    3. Identify emerging areas or gaps in the humanitarian sector for WRC’s engagement through comprehensive analysis of current trends, stakeholder consultations, and needs assessments.
  1. Lead current strategic investments with WRC partners to influence humanitarian and national/municipal systems, including:
    1. Refugee leadership and partnership building
    2. Reevaluate humanitarian action through a gender lens
    3. Economic inclusion and self-reliance
    4. Urban displacement
  1. Lead cross-cutting organizational support and technical assistance associated with current focus areas of economic inclusion and self-reliance and gender and social inclusion.
    1. Program development: Support program team members to develop vision and strategy for critical program areas.  Incubate new program areas that address gaps and needs in the humanitarian response.
    2. Lead and develop a portfolio of research and policy recommendations that further new initiatives and strategic priorities as listed above.
  1. Provide strategic team leadership and management.
  2. In coordination with WRC’s Advocacy and External Affairs department, represent WRC as a thought leader through the cultivation of partnerships with policymakers, media entities, industry influencers, and stakeholders to strengthen WRC’s reputation as a respected authority and innovator.
  1. Travel: 3 – 4 international trips per year (1 – 2 weeks); 3 – 5 domestic trips, including travel to Washington, DC, to share learnings. 2 – 3 conferences/workshops per year to guide climate change and urbanization learning and to enhance WRC’s reputation in those areas.
What We’re Looking For:
  • An enthusiastic thought partner with strong strategic oversight and understanding of the humanitarian landscape.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive, non-profit work experience in refugee, humanitarian assistance and/or human rights work, including experience managing projects. 
  • Previous work experience in emergency and other humanitarian contexts. 
  • Strong knowledge of gender, gender integration, gender equality, and intersectionality and work experience related to these topics. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong technical skills knowledge for effective oversight.
  • Demonstrated diplomatic and people management skills: the ability to effectively liaise with a variety of internal and external professional contacts. 
  • Strong organizational skills: the ability to be flexible and work well under pressure in a fast-paced and detailed-oriented team environment. 
  • Good computer skills: facility with MS Word, Excel, and research search engines.  
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills: must be able to work collaboratively, manage professional relationships, seek out diverse perspectives, provide and receive feedback constructively, be solution oriented, meet and communicate deadlines effectively, and embody WRC’s core values of inclusion, equality, integrity, dignity, and forward-thinking.

     Position:                Regular, full-time (1 year grant funded - guaranteed)

     Salary:                     Band 2: $156,285 - $200,000*
                                        (commensurate with experience)

      Work Schedule:         Hybrid (2 days in the office, 3 days remote)

* The salary range as depicted represents the low and top-tier values for the given salary band. It is important to note that while what is depicted represents the total range of the band depicted, this role is budgeted with a salary that begins closer to the starting salary for this band ($156,285-$160,000).
The actual salary of someone hired into the position will be based on numerous factors that will include but may not be limited to professional and academic experience, training, and other business and organizational needs. Individual salary decisions remain dependent on the circumstances of each individual hire and may be adjusted to meet the demands of the role.
