Background  

The Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) works to improve the lives and defend the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children, and young people. As a research and advocacy organization, WRC is dedicated to securing systemic changes in policy and practice that ensure uprooted women, children, and young people can fully exercise their rights to protection, services, and self-sufficiency.  

Scope of Work 

The program assistant is an entry-level position and is responsible for managing a range of administrative, logistical, and support services for the staff based in WRC’s Washington, DC, office. The position reports directly to the director of the Migrant Rights and Justice Program, works closely with colleagues in the Washington office, coordinates with colleagues in New York, and liaises with parties outside of the organization.  

Essential Job Functions 

  • Office management and coordination: Oversee operations and maintenance of the DC office; respond to general inquiries and receive guests; manage and purchase office supplies and equipment; serve as point-of-contact for vendors and building management; maintain DC office records; and other support tasks as needed. 

  • Administrative staff support: Provide administrative support to the MRJ team and vice president of advocacy and external relations; manage travel arrangements; support on-site and off-site meetings, events, and retreats; assist with administrative on-boarding of consultants and interns; orient new Washington, DC, staff as needed, including IT setup; liaise with Finance Department for billing, payment, accounts payable, and accounts receivable; and other tasks as needed. 

  • Grants management support: In coordination with WRC’s Development team and the Migrant Rights & Justice team, support and coordinate activity on grant portfolio, to include coordination on prospective grants, required funder correspondence and reports for existing grants, and any other deliverables.  

  • MRJ finance support: In coordination with Finance team, assist MRJ director to track budgets, finance reports, spending, and development; identify and resolve how program expenses are allocated and itemized via grant codes for MRJ accounts; ensure grant and payroll allocation accuracy for MRJ team.  

  • Programmatic support: Coordinate MRJ policy team meetings and internal reporting of activities within WRC; take notes for internal and coalition meetings; perform light copy-editing and graphic design duties as fits the employee’s skill set; conduct research for MRJ and external relations staff as needed; draft letters, fact sheets, and other documents as assigned by MRJ and external relations staff. 

  Qualifications: 

  • A self-starter who can point to projects where they have driven an outcome 

  • Proven attention to detail: the ability to track and process multiple details simultaneously and accurately.  

  • Able to coordinate multiple projects with minimal supervision.  

  • Flexible work attitude: the ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment with a small staff and competing demands. 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  

  • Trustworthy: Ability to use sound judgment in maintaining confidential information.  

  • Excellent writing skills, and the ability to write, edit, and finalize documents.  

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree. Fields in or related to humanities and social sciences or International studies preferred.  

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Excel, strong IT and computer skills.  

  • Fluency with Outlook (essential) and Zoom (preferred).  

  • Experience with basic budget coding and tracking (preferred). 

  • A strong and demonstrated interest in WRC’s issue areas, including women’s rights, reproductive justice, refugee rights, migrant rights and justice, international human and humanitarian rights.  

 
Reports to: Director of Migrant Rights and Justice 

Position: Regular, full-time (hybrid)  

Location: Washington, DC 

Target Salary: $43,260 - $63,600 (Commensurate with experience) 

The target salary as depicted above represents the low and mid-point values for the given salary band in which this position falls. The actual salary of someone hired into the role will be based on various factors including but not limited to professional and academic experience, training, associated responsibilities and other business and organizational needs. Individual salary decisions remain dependent on the circumstances of each individual hire. The range as listed represents just one component of WRC’s total compensation package.
